Keith Vaz Conference message

Keith VazOur major towns and cities - from London to Leicester, Manchester to Mansfield and Birmingham to Brighton - are a mirror of the world. Labour recognises and celebrates the huge contribution that ethnic minority communities have made to Britain – from providing vital skills and expertise to enriching our shared culture and values.

Britain has been the most successful nation in dealing with the issue of race relations,
through history we are a country of different cultures - and we celebrate and take pride in the fact that people of different religions and races are treated with respect and given rights of citizenship and with it the prospect of real equality.

The National Ethnic Minority Forum will be the opportunity for you to learn about what Labour is doing for ethnic minorities in Britain today, as well as a chance to talk about how you think the government can take the diversity agenda forward. It’s vital that ethnic minority perspectives on major issues are taken into account when policy is made.

I have made this a priority as Chair of the Ethnic Minority Taskforce – to make sure that your views are truly listened to. Because it is you who understands best the challenges your neighbourhood faces, you that knows what is needed to better support your family and raise aspirations for all. It is by listening to ethnic minority communities that keeps Labour on the side of hard working families.

As Chair of the Ethnic Minority Taskforce, I know that the government really takes the needs and opinions of ethnic minorities seriously. I urge you to use this day as a platform to tell us the issues that matter to you and your hopes and wishes for a prosperous and diverse Britain.

Keith Vaz MP
Chair of Ethnic Minority Taskforce and
NEC representative, BAME Labour

Ok Treborc, people with disabilities do indeed face disadvantages over lots of people. As a socialist I would hope that the Labour Party does what it can to support all 'minorities'. There is no hierarchy of disadvantage and you are right some people face double even multiple disadvantage. We need to ask ourselves as members what are we doing to help and if you are indeed doing something to help people with disabilities locally or nationally, well done. Yes roll on the elections so we can get another full term of a Labour Gov'nmt. We are working our socks off here in the SWest for the local elections coming up.

Dear Stuart after 7/7 London bombing volunteers from British Muslim Community came forward and majority of British Muslim community unite to fight with tiny minority extremists. I quote Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s words which he said several times “ We have to win hearts & minds on war on terror” I think now is the right time when we have to seriously try to find out root causes of London suicide bombing including causes & real problems of suicide bombing. Suicide bombers are mad and bad, no doubt, but who made them bad and mad? What are the inequalities & injustice in this society? What are the barriers who hold back young British Muslims to mingle & talk with host community? Why still young British Muslims question mark to the Government? I think Keith Vaz MP as a NEC representative for BAME Labour & Chair National Ethnic Minority Task Force raises these concerns to Labour Government including Prime Minister Gordon Brown & the Cabinet Office. British Muslims are the largest group in British Ethnic Minorities and we, I mean the Labour Party leadership should involve them directly in decision making process. I think we have to organise series of programs throughout the country invite Government Ministers, Host community and Ethnic Minority particularly British Muslims youth so we can understand each other needs and win hearts & minds of our British society. In the end organised crime & terrorism are linked and eating our society as a cancer which we have to fix together as this is our war.

Dear Keith Vaz MP. to be blunt and to avoid beating around the bush, where does the Labour party stand on it's policy on the preaching of extremist views in public? Obviously there is a conflict of interest between the general public and the rights of the individual who is protected by their human rights to speak out as they wish. Does the party feel that these people should be stopped from speaking their views in public, to help protect the public. Or does the party feel that they can't stop these people from expressing their views and that people from within the Islmaic community need to come forward and unite against this common enemy?

Dear Keith Vaz MP, I am Regional Organiser for Ethnic Minority Task Force (Yorkshire & the Humber) and I received same types of comments throughout in the Yorkshire Region. Ethnic Minority members always asking me about guidance and training programs available to them through the Labour Party. I have no clear answers for them. Please highlight as a Chair of National Ethnic Minority Task Force, how and when a training session willbe available to people of Yorkshire region?

Hello Keith I have just been elected as the CLP ethnic minority officer. This is a first for the Great Yarmouth CLP - and I am asking for guidance/resources and training. Like Rose in Exeter - we face racism and prejudice on a daily basis - and it distorts and diverts the public conversation with the politicians. Any help the Labour Party can give me would be well used and appreciated.

hello Keith, here in Exeter we want our CLP to be inclusive and welcoming to people from BME communities. We face daily racist attitudes when we canvass even Labour supporters. Can the Labour Party create resources and training for activists to help respond and challenge this?
