Labour Women

The Labour Women’s organisation has existed since early in Labour’s history. As a party whose fundamental value is equality, women have long been active, involved and respected in all levels of the Labour Party.

Women are not left behind the scenes or simply there to make the tea – Labour women can and do reach the top. Labour has the best record of any UK political party in terms of women’s representation: with more women MPs then the other political parties put together, equal representation of women and men in the devolved bodies and many women representing their local communities on councils up and down the country. In addition to this, the Ministers for Women provide a focus for women’s concerns straight to the heart of government.

Representing and delivering real improvements to the lives of women in this country is core to Labour’s values. We aim to listen to and work for women in the community, involve women members in party activity, and ensure that Labour women are elected to provide a balanced perspective on policy-making.

The women’s organisation of the Labour Party seeks to:

• Ensure equal representation
Ensuring that women are equally represented at all levels of the party and in all the party’s decision-making bodies.
• Support and enable women
Giving women the support, encouragement, confidence and skills to play a full and equal role in the mainstream of the party.
• Campaign on issues that affect women’s lives
• Bring women together
• Enabling women to come together through formal and informal meetings, training, conferences and social events, in order to enable women to support each other, share experiences and expertise, build networks and come to collective views.
• Encourage women to become members of the Labour Party
