Working women

Working women‘We get told that ‘Britain is a more prosperous country than ever before’ but what does that mean? I tell you what that means for me – I’m in work, my brother is in work and my friends all have jobs.

It is all too easy to forget that this just wasn’t the case under the Tory government – getting people into training, education and employment was not a priority for them. Not only is there more opportunity for people to find jobs and develop their skills today, the conditions that people face at work have significantly improved too.

A colleague of mine is the main carer for her mother – thanks to Labour, she too has the right to request flexible working hours. When I decide to start a family of my own, I will benefit from up to 9 months maternity pay, which has risen from £55.70 in 1997 to £112.75 a week now – that’s a whopping 100% increase in the past 10 years. What’s more, I’ve heard that the Labour government has plans to give my partner the right to take up to 26 weeks additional paternity leave before our child’s first birthday, to allow me to return to work early.

Labour has not only improved working conditions and workers’ rights, the Labour government has also made sure that there is fairness and equality in the workplace for women. It’s shocking to think that employers could once discriminate against somebody just because they were a woman – but they could. Now, with Labour, everybody’s talents are unlocked and we all have the opportunity to realise our full potential.’
